Black Friday is here, though to be fair it's been with us, in spirit, since the start of November. And with the latest AMD CPU generation getting a little older, there are deals to be had. The first Ryzen processors were released almost five years ago, and the Zen architecture at their heart has completely transformed AMD's fortunes. Not only has this led to AMD catching up with Intel in the gaming space, but it's actually the preferred option for many system builders. At least it was until Intel released its 12th Gen Alder Lake chips.
It's fair to say that the Core i5 12600K and Core i9 12900K are phenomenal processors. We weren't initially convinced about Intel's hybrid design, but it appears to have ushered in some incredible performance gains in game. It's still early days though, and the overall platform cost is very high, so there's still plenty of room for AMD's offerings.
The latest Zen 3 chips, such as the Ryzen 5 5600X and Ryzen 9 5900X are very competitive, and if you can save a bit of cash when grabbing one, then you can use that cash to bolster another part of your gaming PC.
We'd recommend avoiding the first generation Ryzen 1000-series for normal gaming, as the later generations really improved on things like gaming performance and memory compatibility. Still, if you're looking to build a cheap and cheerful retro machine or a boring work system, then they can be hard to beat.
Alternatively, if you're in the market for a chip from the blue team, then check out the best Intel CPU deals right now instead. With the release of Alder Lake, retailers may be trying to get rid of last-gen stock at a reduced rate.

In the UK:
AMD Ryzen 5900X | 12 Cores, 24 Threads | 3.7GHz to 4.8GHz |
$569.99 $479 at Amazon (save $90.99)
The AMD Ryzen 5900X has never had a price this low before. This is one of our favorite CPUs for gaming with its 12 cores and 24 threads and a 4.8GHz boost. Keep in mind, you’ll need a CPU cooler too.
AMD Ryzen 7 5800X | 3.8GHz | 8-Core| AM4| Cooler not included|
$449.99 $299.99 at Micro Center (save $150)
$150 off makes this the cheapest we’ve ever spied the 8-core AMD Ryzen 7 5800X, so if you’re in the market, definitely jump on this while you can. Even without such a hefty discount, this chip is a seriously good deal for gaming and content creation.
AMD Ryzen 9 5950X | 16-core, 32-thread | 105W |
$799.99 $718.92 at Amazon (save $80)
If you need true CPU power, then this is the processor you want. It’s still a big pile of cash for a processor, but if you’re a gamer that also has a creative bent, then this will pay for itself quickly enough. 3D rendering, video encoding, and raw number-crunching all benefit from the huge amount of cores on offer here. That it’s an awesome gaming chip as well is just the icing on the cake.
AMD Ryzen 7 5700G | eight-Core, 16-thread | 65W |
$359 $309.99 at Best Buy (save $50)
This isn’t a massive saving, to be fair, but given you don’t need a graphics card with this capable APU for some light gaming, it’s still a decent bargain. You get a full-fat eight-core, 16-thread chip that will handle serious tasks every bit as well as more expensive offerings. We liked this chip a lot when we reviewed it. It comes with a cooler too.
